Ordinary Ghanaian To Blame for Lack of Development – Political Analyst

In a candid assessment of Ghana’s development challenges, political analyst Yiadom Boakye has pointed fingers at ordinary Ghanaians, attributing the country’s underdevelopment to their voting behavior.

Mr Boakye during an appearance on Opemsuo Radio’s NKwantannanso with Kofi Boakye on February 26, 2024, contended that many citizens prioritize loyalty to political parties over selecting leaders based on competence, perpetuating a cycle of ineffective governance.

He emphasized the need for Ghanaians to shift away from partisan politics and focus on electing competent leaders. He warned that without this change in mindset, Ghana’s developmental woes would persist.

Boakye highlighted the challenge of holding government officials accountable between election cycles, stressing the importance of making informed voting decisions. He urged citizens to scrutinize candidates’ qualifications and track records, rather than being swayed by superficial factors such as appearance or party affiliation.

“The only way you can hold a political leader accountable is after 4 years, so when voting you vote for the right person.”

“The reason Ghana is not developing is because we vote based on someone’s beauty, his allegiance to party….  not competence.”

According to Boakye, the culture of prioritizing party loyalty is also prevalent among political leaders and this has hindered the implementation of essential policies mandated by the constitution.

“We have Directive Principles of State Policy in the constitution, it talks about National Development Planning Commission, that will come up with a national policy, that will plan for the country so that it will be non partisan but what happens is the politicans want to implement their manifestoes. So after 8 years, the next government fails to continue the old government’s policies.”

“The politicians won’t implement what is in the constitution because it won’t favour them.”
