Virgil van Dijk Extends Liverpool Contract

Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk has extended his contract with Liverpool.

His initial contract was due to expire at the end of this season, however, the new contract will have him stay for two more years.

The Reds captain and centre-back said the chance to stay at Anfield was amazing.

“I’m very happy, very proud…There are so many emotions obviously that go through my head right now speaking about it. It’s a proud feeling, it’s a feeling of joy. It’s just incredible. The journey I’ve had so far in my career, to be able to extend it with another two years at this club is amazing and I’m so happy,” he told the club media.

The 33-year-old joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 and he quickly set about establishing himself as one of the finest defenders in world football.

His defensive prowess has earned him 314 appearances and 27 goals to date, assisting the club to win seven major honours.

Among the trophy haul are the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups.
