One Dead, Another Injured in Tanker Crash and Fire on Akosombo–Tema Highway

One person has been confirmed dead and another injured after a tanker crashed and caught fire on the Akosombo–Tema Highway at Teye Kwame in the early hours of Saturday, June 28, 2026.

In a statement, the Ghana National Fire Service said the Somanya Municipal Fire Station received the distress call at 0441 hours.

A five-member crew led by Station Officer II Oteng responded and met the overturned tanker engulfed in flames.

Firefighters deployed foam to contain the blaze, bringing it under control at 0558 hours and fully extinguishing it at 0603 hours.

The GNFS said one male, believed to be the driver, was found burnt beyond recognition at the scene.

The driver’s mate sustained severe burns and was rushed to Akuse Hospital by ambulance for treatment.

The fire destroyed the tanker.

According to the Service, the cause of the crash remains under investigation due to the extensive damage to the vehicle and the limited information available at the scene.
