Nurses Strike: Health Minister Appeals to Retired Nurses and Midwives to Volunteer

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has appealed to retired nurses and midwives to volunteer their services in public health facilities struggling due to the ongoing industrial action.

He sees their services as critical given the urgency of the situation and the suffering of patients.

“Government appeals to public-spirited retired nurses and midwives to volunteer their services for a brief period pending the resolution of the impasse,” he said at a press conference on June 10, 2025.

Meanwhile, as part of efforts to mitigate the impact of the strike, the Minister announced that a comprehensive list of health facilities to complement facilities where nursing services are lacking will be published for patients to seek medical care.

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) laid down their tools on June 2 in response to plans by the government to defer the implementation of their approved conditions of Service.

However, the government seeks a roadmap for the successful implementation of the new conditions, noting that the immediate implementation will dislocate the national budget.

At the presser, the Minister said the government remains committed to the needed engagement that will lead to the approval and implementation of the new conditions of service for nurses and midwives.
