NPP Must Prioritise Unity And Reconciliation Ahead Of 2028 Elections – Henry Kwabena Kokofu

NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman aspirant, Henry Kwabena Kokofu Esq., has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to prioritise unity, reconciliation, and effective communication as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.
Speaking in an interview with Kofi Boakye on Nkwantannso on Opemsuo Radio, he said although the party had successfully elected Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer during the January 31 primaries, the bigger challenge now is rebuilding unity ahead of the next national elections.
“On January 31, we held our primaries and elected our flagbearer. The other aspirants accepted that Mahamudu Bawumia had won. The real contest, however, lies ahead in the 2028 general elections, so the most important thing now is good communication and unity within the party,” he stated.
Mr. Kokofu noted that internal disagreements, harsh comments, and misunderstandings in the party created tension and must be addressed carefully.
According to him, although the tensions appeared to have reduced after the primaries, the silence within the party was itself concerning and required deliberate efforts to rebuild relationships among members.
“After the primaries, everything has gone quiet, but to me, the silence itself is worrying,” he added.
He disclosed that he had personally taken steps to help calm tensions and promote reconciliation within the party, while commending the flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for also initiating efforts toward party unity.
Mr. Kokofu further stressed that some aggrieved members need to be approached and listened to rather than ignored.
He added that not all internal party disputes should be handled politically, suggesting that professional mediators and negotiators could sometimes help resolve tensions objectively.
“Not every issue should be handled purely politically; sometimes we may need professional mediators and negotiators,” he noted.
Touching on the party’s internal electoral calendar, Mr. Kokofu disclosed that polling station elections were currently underway and expected to end on Saturday [May 16, 2026], after which the party would proceed with electoral area coordinator elections, constituency elections, regional elections, and diaspora polls.
He said all internal elections are expected to end by September.
Despite the NPP’s defeat in the last general election, Mr. Kokofu expressed confidence that the party remains determined to reorganise and return stronger.
“What remains now is for our leadership to come together with knowledge, humility, and mutual respect so the party can move forward united,” he stated.
