Mining Act Review: Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs Granted a Month To Present Recommendations

The Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs has a month to present it’s recommendations for the review of the 2014-Mining Policy and proposed amendments to the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703).

The House took its turn in the ongoing consultation for the review with the Ministry of Lands on July 17, 2025.

The proposed amendments features categorising mining into medium-scale and large-scale to empower Ghanaians to venture into large-scale mining; Introducing transitional provisions to enable mining companies to transfer their operations to Ghanaians; Implementing a cooperative mining scheme to empower local communities and many others.

Providing insight into the proposed review during the meeting were the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon Alhaji Yussif Sulemana, the CEO of the Minerals Commission, Martin Ayisi and the Chairman of the Review Committee, Benjamin Ayeh.

The government is seeking a wide range of input to shape the amendment of the Act which has outlived its relevance.

The House presided over by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, at the end witnessed the constitution of a Committee including Nana Asumegyahene, Nana Sabronumhene and Nana Domeabrahene to lead the House’s review.

Otumfuo charged them to diligently peruse the current Act and the proposed amendments clause by clause and make suitable recommendations in the interest of the country.

The remaining members of the House were encouraged to offer all the needed support and contribution to the Committee

His Majesty also charged the deputy Minister to make all necessary documentation available to facilitate the Committee’s work within the stipulated period.
