Ministry Of Communication Extends SIM Registration Exercise

The Ministry of Communication and Digitalisation, headed by Ursula Owusu Erkuful, has extended the deadline for the Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card registration exercise to July 31, 2022.

The exercise was initially scheduled to end on March 31, 2022, after which SIM cards that haven’t undergone the exercise would be deactivated.

The four months extension, according to the Ministry, is because more than 7.5 million people do not yet have their Ghana Card, the only acceptable identification card for the exercise.

It also cited the update of the SIM Registration App for the registration of diplomats and the development of a Self-Service SIM Registration App to facilitate registration of SIM cards for Ghanaians resident abroad, which the Ministry said will be ready in mid-April.

The Ministry confirmed that as of March 17, 14,091,542 SIM Cards were linked to the Ghana Card, 10,348,532 Bio-Captures conducted and 99,445 New SIMs registered.
