Mahama Releases GHC 300 Million for Flood Relief and Mitigation After Accra Downpour

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Finance to release GHS 300 million from the Contingency Fund to support urgent flood relief and mitigation following hours of unusually heavy rainfall that submerged parts of Accra and other communities in the southern sector.

According to a statement from the Presidency issued by Jubilee House, GHS 150 million of the amount will be used for immediate relief for flood-affected persons and communities in the south, while the remaining GHS 150 million will finance flood mitigation measures intended to reduce future incidents.

The President also ordered the deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Police Service to work alongside NADMO and other security agencies in ongoing rescue and relief operations across the city.

The directive is part of a broader government response aimed at safeguarding residents and limiting further damage.

On Monday, President Mahama undertook an aerial tour of the flooded areas to assess the full extent of the situation.

Following the tour, he announced a raft of steps being taken to protect residents and prevent a recurrence of flooding.

The heavy rains over the past few days have disrupted homes, businesses and public infrastructure in low-lying areas, prompting the government to scale up both emergency support and longer-term drainage interventions.
