Mahama Inspects Fire-Damaged GRIDCo Substation at Akosombo Dam

President John Dramani Mahama has visited the Akosombo Dam to assess the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) substation damaged by fire, an incident that knocked over 1,000 megawatts off the national grid.
The President, on April 30, 2026, inspected ongoing restoration works at the site and interacted with engineers and technical staff leading the recovery efforts.
He commended the GRIDCo engineers for their swift and professional response to the incident, noting that their intervention had prevented further system losses.
“Government remains committed to restoring stable power supply and strengthening the resilience of Ghana’s energy infrastructure,” President Mahama said during the visit.
The fire, which broke out at the substation, disrupted transmission and led to widespread power outages across parts of the country.
GRIDCo has since initiated emergency restoration works to bring the lost capacity back online.
Officials at the dam briefed the President on the extent of the damage, interim measures taken to stabilise the grid, and the timeline for full restoration.
President Mahama assured the public that the government is prioritising the rehabilitation of the substation and will invest in safeguards to prevent similar incidents.
He also called for continued public patience as engineers work to restore normal supply.
The visit forms part of the government’s efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of the power sector following the incident.
