Kindness at the Airport Has Consequences- GACL

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) is urging passengers passing through Accra International Airport and its regional terminals to stay alert, warning that a moment of inattention can create serious problems for both individuals and airport operations.

In a travel advisory released on Friday, the GACL reminded travellers that airports are high-traffic, high-security environments where vigilance matters.

The core warning targets a common but risky behaviour where passengers agree to help strangers by carrying bags, parcels, or packages through security and customs.

“A simple act of kindness could have far-reaching consequences,” GACL warned.

Security officials say criminals often exploit travellers’ goodwill to move contraband, prohibited items, or illicit substances.

Once that item passes through screening with you, the law treats you as the owner, regardless of your intentions.

“You Are Responsible for Anything You Carry at the Airport,” the advisory emphasised.

That means arrest, detention, prosecution, missed flights, and a criminal record — even if you were “just helping.”

GACL therefore urged passengers to be alert and decline all requests to transport items for others.

With passenger traffic rising ahead of holidays, the company says vigilance and refusing to carry unknown luggage are the simplest ways to avoid becoming part of a crime.
