Information Ministry Condemns Attack On Benya FM Presenter

The Ministry of Information (MoI) has condemned the May 16 attack on a presenter of Benya FM, a radio station in Elmina.

On Monday, while Eric Blessing Eshun was hosting a show on the discussion of the unavailability of premix fuel to fishermen while the product was easily accessible to persons who are not into fishing, reports say, some heavily built men stormed the radio studio and physically abused the host and vandalised the studio.

Reacting to this, the Ministry said, “the Ministry of Information condemns the reported assault in no uncertain terms and urges the police to promptly investigate and prosecute the alleged perpetrators accordingly.”

It disclosed that the Deputy Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, has contacted the manager of the station and the District Police Commander to collaborate in bringing the perpetrators to book.

The ministry held that there is no jurisdiction for a broadcaster to be assaulted for doing his work.

It advised that “an individual or group with grievances against a broadcaster’s or journalist’s comments or indeed any individual must follow legitimate and legal avenues to seek redress… The National Media Commission (NMC) and courts also constitute legitimate institutions to register complaints against media practitioners and companies”.

Benya FM has gone off the air since the day of the attack.
