High Court Orders Accused Persons in $2m Sky Train Case to Open Defence

The High Court has directed former Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund GIIF CEO Solomon Asamoah and former Board Chairman Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi to open their defence in the Sky Train case, after dismissing their no-case submission.
Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem Sai disclosed the development on Wednesday in a Facebook post.
According to him, the two accused persons had argued that “the Republic has not provided enough evidence to the Court.”
The Court, however, disagreed and ordered them to present their defence.
“The Court has since directed them to open their defence and give reasons why they should not be convicted for causing US$ 2 million loss to the nation,” Mr Srem Sai stated.
The Republic v Solomon Asamoah & Prof Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi relates to the controversial Sky Train project.
The state alleges the two caused a financial loss of $2 million to Ghana in connection with the failed deal.
Both men have been on trial as part of efforts to account for public funds linked to the project.
They are yet to present evidence in their defence following the court’s latest ruling.
Mr Srem Sai expressed appreciation to the prosecution team.
“Gratitude to our team of State Attorneys and BNI investigators who have worked tirelessly in the past months to make this possible,” he said.
The matter is expected to proceed with the accused persons opening their defence in the coming court sittings.
