Health Ministry Announces Payment of Nurses’ Arrears, Plans to Recruit 16,000 Health Workers in 2026

The Ministry of Health has paid two months of salary arrears owed to newly recruited nurses while announcing plans to recruit up to 16,000 health workers this year as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s health workforce.

In a statement, the Ministry said the payment of the arrears fulfils an earlier commitment to the nurses.

It further assured all affected personnel that the next payment will cover three months each and will be made from May to July 2026, as previously announced.

The Ministry expressed appreciation for the patience and cooperation of stakeholders and reaffirmed its commitment to improving service delivery through a stronger health workforce.

Individuals facing challenges or needing clarification have been advised to contact the Human Resource for Health Development Directorate of the Ministry for assistance.

Recruitment
On recruitment, the Ministry said plans are underway to engage about 16,000 trained health professionals this year.

Financial clearance has already been secured for 8,000 of them, with efforts ongoing to obtain clearance for the remainder.

“No health worker will be engaged without financial provision,” the Ministry stated.

The clearances have been distributed across various health cadres to ensure the gradual absorption of personnel into the health system, it noted.

The Ministry stressed that the recruitment portal remains the sole official channel for all recruitment processes to promote transparency, fairness, and accountability.

It acknowledged anxiety among some applicants who are finding difficulties in applying due to the system stampede.

That notwithstanding, it confirmed that many have successfully accessed the portal.

The Ministry said it is actively working to secure additional clearances to accommodate more qualified applicants and urged the public to rely only on official information regarding recruitment.
