Gov’t Spends GH₵888.8m on No-Fee Policy Since July 2025

The government says it has spent GH₵888.8 million to support 312,448 first-year tertiary students under its No-Fee Policy since the policy was launched on July 2, 2025.
According to Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, the policy is “active and operational nationwide” and was introduced to alleviate the financial burden on students and parents seeking tertiary education.
Answering questions in Parliament on June 18, 2026, the Minister broke down the expenditure, saying the 152,698 validated first-year students benefited at a cost of GH₵399,374,737 in the 2024 academic year.
For the ongoing 2025 academic year, he said, 159,750 students have benefited so far at a cost of GH₵489,456,427.60.
“Mr Speaker, this is what we have done to support young people desirous of accessing tertiary education. Our policy remains access, relevance and quality,” the Minister stated.
The No-Fee Policy, launched July 2, 2025, covers tuition for all first-year students in public tertiary institutions as part of the government’s commitment to expanding access to higher education.
