Gov’t To Roll Out New Biometric SIM Registration To Tackle Fraud

Government will undertake a new biometric SIM registration exercise to strengthen the security and reliability of Ghana’s telecommunication sector, the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has announced.

Answering questions on the floor of Parliament, the Minister said the Electronic Communications Numbering Resource Registration exercise will address gaps identified in the previous SIM registration process.

He explained that the new system will introduce real-time biometric verification through the National Identification Authority (NIA) to curb SIM swap fraud, mobile money fraud, identity theft and the use of unverified SIM cards.

According to the Minister, the exercise will be backed by stronger cybersecurity measures and a new legal framework to improve consumer protection and the integrity of the National SIM Register.

Hon. Samuel Nartey George added that subscribers will be able to register remotely using compatible smartphones.

Additional registration centres, appointment systems and mobile registration teams will also be deployed to improve access, particularly for people in underserved communities.

The announcement signals the government’s renewed push to clean the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) database and enhance trust in digital transactions across the country.
