Parliament Passes National Defence University, Ghana Bill, 2026

Parliament has passed the National Defence University, Ghana Bill, 2026, paving the way for the establishment of a dedicated tertiary institution to advance defence, security and strategic studies in the country.
The passage of the Bill was announced by Parliament’s Media Relations Department and flagged in a “PARLIAMENT ALERT” on Friday.
The National Defence University, Ghana Bill, 2026 seeks to provide legal backing for the creation of the university to train officers of the Ghana Armed Forces and other security agencies, as well as civilians in areas of defence management, peacekeeping, and national security policy.
The legislation seeks to establish an autonomous university with the mandate to build internal capacity and independently award its own degrees.
It is designed to serve as a central academic and operational hub to coordinate best practices and strategic security management across the Ghana Armed Forces and other sister security agencies.
With the Bill now passed, it will proceed to the President for assent before becoming law.
The new university adds to government’s efforts to strengthen Ghana’s security architecture and build local capacity for higher learning in defence and strategic studies.
