Government Interdicts GRIDCo CEO Over Akosombo Fire Incident

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has interdicted the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), Ing. Mark Awuah Baah, with immediate effect.

Ing. Baah has been asked to step aside to make way for investigations into a fire incident that occurred at the Akosombo Power Control Centre.

The blaze, which disrupted power system operations last week, raised concerns over safety protocols and operational oversight at the critical facility.

A committee of inquiry is expected to establish the cause of the fire and assess any lapses in maintenance or emergency response.

In a related development, the government has announced a major shake-up in the leadership of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region.

While details of the changes remain undisclosed, the move is believed to be part of broader reforms to improve electricity distribution and customer service in the region.

Ashanti Region remains one of ECG’s largest operational areas, and has faced recurring complaints over billing, outages, and infrastructure challenges in recent months.

Meanwhile, the Minister is expected to hold a press briefing on recent developments in the power sector at 2:00 p.m. today, Monday, April 27, 2026.

The briefing is anticipated to address the GRIDCo interdiction, the ECG leadership changes, and ongoing measures to stabilise electricity supply nationwide.

It will also touch on the government’s green transition agenda and grid resilience strategies.
