Ghana Defers Evacuation of Nationals from South Africa

The planned evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa, scheduled to begin on May 21, 2026, has been deferred by a few days as authorities work to meet legal and logistical requirements.

This comes after it was reported on the BBC that only one Ghanaian had shown up at the airport.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said more than 800 Ghanaians have registered with Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria seeking evacuation following the latest wave of xenophobic attacks.

According to the Ministry, the postponement will allow the High Commission to complete mandatory passenger screening, multi-institutional coordination, and secure flight permits in line with South African legal conditions.

Ghanaian and South African officials have agreed on enhanced pre-evacuation modalities to expedite the process, the Ministry said, adding that senior officials on both sides remain actively engaged.

“The Government of Ghana assures our nationals in South Africa that best efforts are being pursued to ensure their safe return home,” the statement said, commending those affected for their understanding and patience.

The Ministry said it would continue to update the public in a transparent and timely manner.
