French President Macron to Address Reparatory Justice Conference in Ghana – Ablakwa

The Government of Ghana has confirmed that French President Emmanuel Macron will address the Next Steps Conference on Reparatory Justice, a high-level gathering being hosted in Accra by President John Dramani Mahama.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa made the announcement in a social media post, stating that President Macron is expected to welcome a good-faith dialogue on historical injustice against Africans.

The French leader will also outline France’s commitment to Reparatory Justice following the landmark adoption of a Ghana-led UN resolution.

That resolution, passed at the United Nations, formally declared the transatlantic enslavement and its consequences as the gravest crime against humanity.

Ghana spearheaded the resolution, positioning Ghana at the centre of global conversations on reparations and historical redress.

According to the Minister, President Macron’s participation signals a willingness by France to engage directly on the issue and signals a shift toward more open discussions between former colonial powers and African nations on reparatory justice.

The Next Steps Conference, being hosted by President Mahama, is expected to bring together heads of state, policymakers, academics and civil society leaders to chart a roadmap for reparations, reconciliation, and development for descendants of the transatlantic slave trade.

The conference further cements Ghana’s role as a leading voice on reparatory justice on the international stage.
