FDA Warns Against Public Use Of Laughing Gas

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has cautioned the public against the use of Nitrous Oxide popularly known as laughing gas at night clubs and parties.

Nitrous oxide is a colourless gas that’s most commonly found in pressurised metal canisters.

Under normal circumstances, Nitrous Oxide is used for preservative and medical purposes but it is currently being abused.

According to the FDA, Nitrous Oxide is now being used at nightclubs and parties to induce euphoria and laughter.

“The authority hereby cautions the public that the misuse of Nitrous Oxide gas is extremely hazardous”, it noted.

Low blood pressure, heart attack, anaemia, suffocation, loss of consciousness, immune system disorder, mental and neurological disorder, depression, and incontinence are some of the risks associated with its abuse.

In addressing this, the Authority says it is collaborating with relevant stakeholder agencies.

In the meantime, nightclubs, pubs and organisers of parties have been warned to desist from the abuse of laughing gas.

The public has also been urged to report the abuse of Nitrous Oxide.
