Caleb Yirenkyi Scores as Black Stars Earn 1-1 draw against Wales in Cardiff

Ghana showed resilience and character as they came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Wales in an international friendly at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The Black Stars took the lead in the 66th minute through substitute Caleb Yirenkyi, who produced a clinical finish to give Carlos Queiroz’s side the advantage. However, Hull City forward Lewis Koumas struck late in the game to level the score for the hosts and deny Ghana victory on the night.
It was an encouraging performance from the Black Stars, particularly as it marked the first game in charge for new head coach Carlos Queiroz. The team displayed good organisation, discipline and tactical awareness throughout the encounter, giving fans reason for optimism ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking after the match, the Portuguese tactician was pleased with his players’ commitment and application.
“What really pleased me a lot is the way the players listened to my instruction; my game plan; they were very respectful,” Queiroz said.
“At the end, we have to qualify for the second round. That is the main goal of the team and my main priority. That is our focus,” he added.
The result provides Queiroz with valuable information as he continues to fine-tune the squad. Ghana will now prepare for their final warm-up match against Jamaica on June 10 before travelling to North America for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. They will kick off their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
Overall, the draw in Cardiff offered a solid platform for the team to build upon as they intensify preparations for what promises to be a challenging but exciting tournament.
