GAF Recruitment Stampede: Mahama Reveals Six Deceased Applicants Are Females- Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that the six applicants of the Ghana Armed Forces who died in Accra during a screening exercise were all females.
Speaking at the launch of the Nkoko Nketenkete initiative on November 12, 2025, in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, he requested a minute of silence for them.
“Some time ago, there was a discreet recruitment for a security service, so I promise Ghanaians I would undertake a transparent merit-based recruitment when elected. When I assumed office, my government announced the recruitment and set up a portal for applications. Following that, we set today for the regional screening exercise.”
He said the exercise was attended by a large number of people at the El-Wak Stadium in the capital city.
The deceased were potential recruits who were trampled during a rush to enter the venue.
“When the gates were opened, there was a stampede. Some fell and were walked over. 12 are in critical condition. We pray they recover.”
President Mahama reported that a similar incident happened in Kumasi, leading to the injury of one person.
“There was a similar situation in Kumasi. The one is in critical condition at a hospital.”
He said he had since instructed the military to halt the Accra exercise for a review of safety protocol to avert recurrence.
