Bawumia Launches Babies Identity Number On Thursday

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is expected to launch Ghana Card numbers for babies on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

The event which comes three months later than earlier advertised, will take place at the Ga North Muncipal Hospital at 9 am.

Speaking at the 57th Congregation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on November 24, 2023, the veep said the project was supposed to be launched in December 2023; however, the timeline could not materialise.

With the introduction of the policy, babies will automatically be assigned unique identification numbers at birth.

The Vice President at the congregation said the new system was developed with the help of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), the Births and Deaths Registry and the National Identification Authority (NIA).

“One of the interesting and remarkable pieces of work that has been done is the integration of the databases of the Ghana health service, the Births and Deaths registry and the National Identification Authority.

“We have completed that work and I am happy to say that next month I am going to launch a new system that will start working next month where every child born in Ghana from birth will be given a Ghana Card number.”

The move is meant to build an ecosystem that allows visibility in a spectrum, according to him.
