Bawumia Calls for Discontinuation of Prosecution of NDC Organiser Arrested Over Alleged Comments About Him
The Office of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to discontinue the prosecution of an organiser of the National Democratic Congress in Agona West who was arrested for allegedly publishing false news and making offensive comments about him.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, the Office of the NPP Flagbearer said its attention had been drawn to the arrest and arraignment of the young man.
Dr. Bawumia stated clearly that he has neither lodged any complaint nor sanctioned any prosecution against the individual or any other citizen.
He said he does not desire and will not endorse the arrest or prosecution of any Ghanaian in his name for speech.
According to the statement, Dr. Bawumia has been the subject of insults and falsehoods throughout his public life but has never responded with the instruments of state power and will not begin now.
His conviction, the statement noted, remains that the answer to offensive speech is better speech, and the answer to falsehood is truth, not handcuffs, courtrooms and crushing bail conditions imposed on ordinary Ghanaians.
He therefore respectfully called on the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to discontinue the prosecution and any similar actions purportedly undertaken on his behalf, and to release the young man to return to his family and livelihood.
The statement added that Ghana’s democracy is strengthened when citizens, including those who oppose, can speak freely without fear.
Dr. Bawumia said he forgives the young man, wishes him well, and urged all political actors to channel their energies toward issues that matter to the Ghanaian people.
