August 4 Isnโ€™t a Holiday; Here Is Why

The Ministry of Interior has reminded Ghanaians that August 4 is no longer a statutory public holiday.

It comes after the incumbent government amended the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

In a Facebook post, the Ministry announced, โ€œPlease be informed that ๐Œ๐จ๐ง๐๐š๐ฒ, ๐Ÿ’๐ญ๐ก ๐€๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ“ is ๐ง๐จ๐ญ a public holiday.โ€

August 4 was designated as a Foundersโ€™ Day public holiday by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his amendments to the Public Holidays Act in 2018.

The amendment gave recognition to the celebrated โ€˜Big Sixโ€™ whose efforts contributed to the achievement of Independence.

Prior to this, the country commemorated Founderโ€™s Day, which only honoured the countryโ€™s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who fought for independence for the then Gold Coast and present-day Ghana.

It was celebrated as a national holiday on his birthday, September 21.

In the review under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration, September 21 became a commemorative day and not a holiday.

Meanwhile, under the recent amendment by President John Dramani Mahama, September 21 has been reinstated as Founderโ€™s Day, while Foundersโ€™ Day has been scrapped.
