August 4 Isnโt a Holiday; Here Is Why

The Ministry of Interior has reminded Ghanaians that August 4 is no longer a statutory public holiday.
It comes after the incumbent government amended the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
In a Facebook post, the Ministry announced, โPlease be informed that ๐๐จ๐ง๐๐๐ฒ, ๐๐ญ๐ก ๐๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐๐๐ is ๐ง๐จ๐ญ a public holiday.โ
August 4 was designated as a Foundersโ Day public holiday by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his amendments to the Public Holidays Act in 2018.
The amendment gave recognition to the celebrated โBig Sixโ whose efforts contributed to the achievement of Independence.
Prior to this, the country commemorated Founderโs Day, which only honoured the countryโs first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who fought for independence for the then Gold Coast and present-day Ghana.
It was celebrated as a national holiday on his birthday, September 21.
In the review under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration, September 21 became a commemorative day and not a holiday.
Meanwhile, under the recent amendment by President John Dramani Mahama, September 21 has been reinstated as Founderโs Day, while Foundersโ Day has been scrapped.
