N/ER: One Arrested For Subjecting Suspected Phone Thief to Instant Justice

The Police in the North East Region have arrested one suspect in connection with a mob action against a suspected phone thief.

Rafai Tahiru, 25, was arrested on October 5, 2025.

A statement by the police reported that Tahiru, alongside two others, alleged that the victim had stolen his mobile phone, tied up his hands and legs with ropes, put him in a tricycle, whipped him with canes and inflicted multiple machete wounds on his forehead and body on Saturday, October 4, in Walewale.

The victim was rescued by onlookers and rushed to the Walewale Government Hospital for medical attention while a report was lodged with Walewale Police.

“The suspects fled the scene after committing the crime. However, on Sunday, 5/10/2025, based on intelligence, suspect Rafai Tahiru was arrested at his hideout in Tampulungu, a suburb of Walewale.”

A search conducted in his room led to the discovery of a matchet stained with blood and believed to be the matchet the suspects used to inflict the wounds on the victim.

He will be put before the court while efforts are being made to get his accomplices arrested.
