Apologise, Retract and Compensate Me or Be Sued; Joyce Bawa to Abronye

Joyce Bawa Mogtari, the Special Aide to President John Dramani Mahama is demanding an unqualified apology, retraction and a ¢10 million compensation for alleged defamatory remarks by the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe.

Correspondence from the lawyers of Joyce in a letter to the politician popularly known as Abronye referenced a television interview the latter granted on March 26 in which he claimed Joyce refrained from vying for a ministerial role to go after a presidential staffer job devoid of stress but financially lucrative.

“You added further that as a result of the huge sums our Client is presently receiving, she has become disrespectful to everyone in Ghana. The said statements have also been published variously on several media platforms including Ghanaweb, an online media platform with a global audience.”

These claims, the lawyers affirmed are false, reckless and malicious and yet have caused “serious” embarrassment and damage to the image and reputation of Joyce.

“The said statements have also attracted various comments from the general public, most of which have been disparaging to our Client’s reputation and image and have exposed our Client to public ridicule and contempt. Your comments also attracted incessant phone calls and messages from friends, family, professional and business associates of our Client.”

Demands
They therefore demanded an apology and a retraction of the said statement on selected media blogs.

“We have the instruction of our Client to demand, which we hereby do, that you immediately cause a publication of a retraction of your statement together with an apology for your statement and the effect it has had on our Client.”

Additionally, they are demanding a ¢10 million compensation.

“Our Client further demands compensation in the sum of Ghs 10, 000, 000.00 (ten million Ghana cedis) for the damage your false, malicious and reckless statements caused her reputation and image.”

In default, they noted that legal action would be commenced against him.

“Please note if you fail to abide by the terms of this notice, we have firm instructions to commence legal action against you to remedy the wrong you have caused.”
