Abolish 10% Bet Tax – NDC Youth Wing

The Youth wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has communicated its intention to picket at the Ministry of Finance in protest of the 10% Withholding Tax on winnings on all betting, lotteries and game.

In a press statement by the National Youth Organiser of the NDC, George Opare Addo, the party said the picketing will run concurrently with the occupying of government offices and agencies across the country.

Also, the party says it intends to “instigate young people to confront officials of this government and demand an end to the corruption and insensitivity of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-failed brigade.”

These, Opare Addo said, are meant to compel the government to rescind its decision about the tax. He failed, however, to communicate the timeline for the protests.

The tax took effect on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, and will be deducted from winnings on lotteries, sports betting, and games of chance at the point of payout.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has warned that betting companies who fail to deduct the tax will have their licences withdrawn.

“As you have been appointed as withholding agents, the obligation is on you to withhold. If you fail to do that, with the interactions we had with you and with the support of the gaming commission, you can be assured that your licenses will be withdrawn.”
