A/R: Kumasi Mayor Vows to Whip Adum Traders Who Refuse to Vacate Roadside

The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has announced plans to use democratic and authoritative means in decongesting the Kumasi Central Business District (CBD) if persuasive means fail.

The MCE says he will be using what he characterizes as a “military-democratic style” when the exercise commences on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.

Addressing the press on Monday, he explained that the strategy entails the use of democratic channels to evacuate traders using pavements and roadsides. However, he will be compelled to use coercive means if the first protocol proves futile.

The forceful means, he said, entails scourging.

“I have my own military-democratic style which I will be implementing. When we say leave the space, and you don’t leave the space and I get there, and you’re not there and my boys are with me, there and there we will beat you,” he announced.

He continued, “In the middle of Adum, if I’m alone, you will be lucky, but if I’m with my ten boys, in their pick-up with their whips, trust me, we will beat you. If you don’t want to experience that kind of situation, do what is right and lawful.”

He explained that the aim is to sanitise the CBD and make it conducive for both traders and buyers and restore Kumasi to its former glory.

“This is Otumfuo’s city, this is the garden city of West Africa, and we have to preserve it. If you want the job to be difficult for me, I will let your body feel the difficulty you are giving to me.”
