Agric Ministry Launches GH¢3.5 Million GAFET to Boost Agricultural Education and Skills

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture has launched the Ghana Agricultural Fund for Education and Transformation, GAFET, to strengthen agricultural education, skills development, research and innovation in the country.
Speaking at the launch on August 11, 2026, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, emphasised that Ghana’s agricultural transformation must be driven by well-trained and skilled human capital. He noted that building capacity in the sector is critical to improving productivity, food security and agribusiness growth.
The Fund has mobilised an initial GH¢3.5 million from five agribusiness partners. The Ministry said it is targeting GH¢10 million by December 2026 and GH¢100 million by 2028.
GAFET will support laboratories, workshops, demonstration farms, machinery, research, scholarships, internships and other practical training opportunities for students and professionals in agriculture.
Hon. Eric Opoku said the initiative is part of broader efforts to modernise agriculture and make it attractive to the youth. “Investing in agricultural education today is investing in Ghana’s food-secure future,” he stated.
The Ministry indicated that GAFET will work with tertiary institutions, technical schools and industry partners to bridge the gap between training and practice, and to ensure graduates are equipped with skills relevant to the evolving agricultural sector.
