Over 50 Shops Destroyed in Obuasi Central Market Fire- MCE

Over 50 shops have been destroyed in a devastating fire outbreak at the Obuasi Central Market (Town Hall), the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Obuasi, Faustilove Appiah, has confirmed.

In a Facebook post on Monday, the MCE said she was at the scene at 3:00 AM on Sunday, September 7, watching the fire unfold, describing the experience as truly painful.

She noted that the affected shops are not just physical structures but represent the sweat, daily bread and foundation that feeds and cares for families, adding that losing them in a matter of hours is a trauma no one should have to endure.

Mrs Appiah assured affected traders that the Assembly is fully with them and will do everything in its power to help them navigate the situation and rebuild.

She disclosed that she convened an emergency stakeholders meeting earlier on Monday morning to assess the full extent of the impact, coordinate an immediate relief strategy and map out next steps for recovery.

The MCE also appealed to the general public to desist from insensitive remarks and wild rumours about the incident.

“This is about people’s entire lives and livelihoods. Behind every burnt store is a father, mother, or young entrepreneur crying over how to survive tomorrow. Insensitive remarks, careless comments, or wild rumours only add salt to open wounds. If you cannot offer comfort, practical help, or a kind word right now, please stay quiet,” she said.

She called on residents to show empathy and treat affected traders with dignity, stressing that Obuasi is a strong, tight-knit family that will overcome the tragedy together.
