Ablakwa Calls for Africa-Led Plan to Combat Sahel Terrorism During Russia Visit

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called for an Africa-led plan, with support from Russia, to address terrorism and violent extremism in the Sahel Region.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday following bilateral discussions with his Russian counterpart, H.E. Sergey Lavrov, Hon. Ablakwa expressed government’s appreciation for Russia’s cooperation and support towards Ghana’s efforts to counter violent extremism in the Sahel.

He however stressed that any sustainable response must be driven by Africans themselves.

“We need an Africa-led plan with support from Russia to address terrorism and violent extremism in the Sahel Region,” he said.

The Minister noted that instability in the Sahel poses direct security and economic risks to West African countries, including Ghana, and underscored the importance of stronger international partnerships that respect African ownership of security solutions.

The bilateral talks covered areas of mutual interest including security cooperation, trade, and multilateral diplomacy.

Hon. Ablakwa is on an official visit to Russia aimed at deepening Ghana-Russia relations and exploring additional avenues of collaboration on peace and security in the region.
