“You Would Feel Proud to Be Part of the Ghanaian Journey”: Semenyo’s Mother Recalls How She Persuaded Him to Play for Ghana

The Ghana Football Association, in partnership with Coach Hene Club and Prince Lamona Consulting, endeavoured to enhance the future national teams of Ghana through early talent identification and integration.

At the Ghana High Commission in the United Kingdom, on Wednesday, May 26, 2026, the two stakeholders held an impactful and interactive parents’ engagement session, in which Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku outlined the long-term vision of the Football Association.

Dela Dzebu, a veteran Ghanaian actress and proud mother of Ghanaian international and Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo, delivered a powerful and emotional message, urging diaspora parents to consider their influence. She shared her experience of convincing her son to represent Ghana.

“I don’t even have words because it’s been a very, very long journey, but it’s been amazing as well. I’m here today to tell you parents: it’s possible. If Antoine did it,” Dzebu said.
She acknowledged that bringing up a footballer in the diaspora involves significant pressure and emotional strain, particularly when young players are confronted with choices between competing national teams.

Dzebu emphasised, “Trust me, it’s hard.” If anybody says it’s been easy, it’s hard. But it’s possible. It is very possible. I said you have to play for Ghana.”
Semenyo’s mother shared with the parents in the diaspora the most defining moments in their journey, which were relatively honest and emotional.

“He asked why. Then I didn’t have any words. I was like, ‘Oh God, in Ghana nothing works.’ He said, ‘If nothing works, why do I have to play for Ghana?” she recalled.
“You would feel proud to be part of the Ghanaian journey; Football in the UK is about boots. Football in Ghana is about blood, pride, legacy, and roots,” she responded to Semenyo.
