Communication Minister to Revoke Authorisation of TV Stations That Broadcast Ritual Content, Unwholesome Content

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has threatened to clamp down on media organisations that broadcast ritual and unwholesome content.
Such radio and TV stations will have their frequency authorisations revoked, he stated.
Speaking at a presser, he cited the case of two teenagers who were influenced by such content in murdering a boy at Kasoa some years ago.
“By the end of this quarter, we will clamp down heavily on stations who are using our frequency- we not going to be getting into the issue of your content. We are simply going to be taking our frequency authorisation to protect Ghanaian children. We will be withdrawing our frequency authorization.”
The import, he said, is to regulate media organizations that have failed to regularize their activities to protect children.
“We need to protect our children. As broadcasters, you have a responsibility. You have a freedom of expression but you have a responsibility to the children of our country. You must manage your freedom with the responsibility of content that you put out.”
“If you will not self-regulate, the state will regulate you. We would not in the name of freedom expose our children to unwholesome content. The problem is that some of these content are shown as early as 5 and 6 pm.”
