Sam George Elected AU Communications Committee Chair For Two-Year Term

Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has been unanimously elected to lead the African Union’s Specialised Technical Committee on Communication and ICT (STC-CICT) for the next two years, beginning in October 2026.

His election took place during the ongoing ministerial meeting in Libreville, Gabon, where he pledged to work towards the practical implementation of Africa’s digital transformation plans.

Mr George said his tenure would focus on strengthening cooperation among member states and ensuring that existing continental digital policies translate into tangible results.

“Africa does not lack strategies. What we have too often lacked is a collective will to implement them at the pace that our people demand,” he said.

He outlined internet connectivity, data governance, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence as key areas that would require joint efforts from African countries.

The minister also stressed the need for African nations to negotiate as a united bloc to improve their position in global digital trade and discussions on technology governance.

He called for a common continental strategy that would enable Africa to help shape international technology regulations rather than remain dependent on innovations developed elsewhere.

Mr George takes over from Lesotho’s outgoing chair and said Ghana would collaborate with other member states to advance the continent’s shared digital transformation agenda throughout his two-year tenure.
