HeFRA Shuts Down and Fines Tamale Technical University Hospital GHC35k

The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) has closed down the Tamale Technical University Hospital and fined it GHC 35,000.

This is in response to what was described as “highly compromised” safety and infection prevention standards in healthcare provision.

The attention of the Agency was first drawn to the issue through intelligence reports supported by video footage and pictures.

The report was confirmed by its Compliance and Enforcement Directorate with a visit to the Hospital on Monday, November 3, 2025, it stated.

The visiting team also found that the facility had been operating with an expired HeFRA license.

“This poses serious concerns for public health and safety,” it affirmed, announcing the closure of the facility effective November 7.

“The facility remains closed until recommendations meant to address safety gaps and infection prevention challenges are fully addressed.”

It explained that the administrative fine must be paid by the facility for the regulatory violations.

The Agency added, “The facility must take expeditious steps to regularise its licensing status with the Agency. The facility must uphold high standards of safety in the provision of health services to its clients.”

HeFRA is mandated by the Health Institutions and Facilities Act,2011 (Act 829), to license and monitor facilities intended for the provision of public and private healthcare services.

The functions of the Agency inter alia include the regulation and monitoring of activities in practice to determine the adequacy and standard of healthcare provided (Section 4c).

In its statement, HeFRA affirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of the Public through the provision of quality healthcare services.
