Student Fingered as Suspect in KNUST Final Year Student Murder

A fellow student is in the custody of the Ashanti Regional Police Command as a suspect in the gruesome murder of Joana Deladem Yabani, a final-year biological sciences student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The lifeless body of Joana was discovered on Thursday dawn by the KNUST Security Services at the KNUST Disability and Rehabilitation Centre.

After reviewing CCTV footage, the suspect was picked up by the police, the KNUST said in a statement.

“We wish to inform the University Community that a suspect, believed to be the mastermind behind the gruesome murder of Miss Joana Deladem Yobani, a final-year Biological Science student at KNUST, has been apprehended by the Regional Police for interrogation following a thorough review of our internal CCT footages.”

With his name withheld, the University only identified the suspect as a fellow student residing in the same hostel as the deceased.

According to the statement the suspect was found in possession of the clothing worn during the crime which has since been retrieved as evidence.

It said it is working with the police to unravel the circumstances under which the tragic incident happened.

Enhanced Security
The University also calmed the nerves of students, assuring that measures have been put in place to ensure their optimum safety.

As part of it, it announced the deployment of over 50 police officers; five mobile police patrol teams from the Anti-Robbery Squad; 34 patrol officers from the SWAT; and additional security personnel stationed at strategic locations on campus.

Meanwhile, the University said efforts are underway to have 100% CCTV coverage on campus.

Safety Tips
Further to this, the University advised students to avoid dark and isolated areas; refrain from carrying laptops and other valuables at night; and report any suspicious activities.
