Private Maritime Operator Approaches Mahama about Establishing Ferry Services at Tema

A private maritime operator has approached the Office of the President about plans to establish ferry services in Tema in the Greater Accra Region.

He intends to operate transportation services for countries on the West African coast, carrying passengers, cargoes and cars.

This was announced by President John Dramani Mahama, who stated that he had referred the investor to the Minister of Transport and the Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority for further action.

He affirmed his unflinching support for the initiative, noting that all the needed encouragement will be offered to establish the service to increase the exchange of goods in the sub-region.

“If you go to Europe, you will know what the ferries are. You can drive your car onto the ferry, and it will sail to Nigeria and drive to Lagos.

“It can take trucks, cargo, passengers, and if we have that service, it can help supplement sending cargoes always by road to avoid checkpoints where you have to pay small VAT to all kinds of offices,” he said at the launch of the Tema Port Expansion Project, a major initiative aimed at boosting trade and strengthening Ghana’s maritime capacity.
