MTN Ghana Outlines Plans to Phase Out 2G and 3G networks

MTN Ghana has outlined a strategic plan to gradually phase out 2G and 3G networks.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of the company, Stephen Blewett, the exercise will be done alongside ensuring an affordable 4G network.
Addressing the press at the Digital Africa Summit on September 3, 2025, at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra, he acknowledged the heavy reliance on 2G and 3G networks by its subscribers.
This, he attributed, to both affordability and constrained devices.
“Despite the widespread availability of 4G, a lot of our customers are still on 3G. For some, it is about managing their data consumption, while others are constrained by devices that cannot support 4G.”
He noted that the long-term plan was to put in place the necessary measures to support migration to 4G by subscribers.
“We cannot simply switch off 2G and 3G without ensuring that affordable 4G devices are within reach. Doing so would risk excluding a large number of Ghanaians,” he cautioned.
