GGSA Allays Fears After Tremor In Accra

The Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) has urged residents of the Greater Accra Region to keep calm following an earth tremor on Sunday morning as it was a minor one.

According to the Authority, monitoring is ongoing.

The event occurred around 7 am on Sunday, November 12, 2023, and struck at a magnitude of 3.6 on the Richter scale, the highest recorded this year.

It was felt in Nyanyano, Kakraba, Weija, Pokuase, Adenta, Kanda and some other parts of Accra Central.

“The epicentre of the event is about 7 kilometres off Weija (5.5318 N, 0.2933 W) in the Greater Accra Region, with origin time at 07:17:51am. The recorded magnitude is indicative of the extent of the tremor. The earth tremor is a minor one and so it is not expected to cause damage,” a statement it released noted.

It added, “These are natural occurrences and therefore difficult to predict. The Authority is committed to the continuous monitoring of these events and informing the public appropriately to ensure public safety and minimize risk.

“Education and sensitization of the public on awareness and response during earth tremors is important and currently being undertaken by the Authority. The public is urged to remain calm and go about their normal activities.”

In March this year, a tremor with a magnitude of 2.8 was experienced in Accra and parts of the Central Region.

Meanwhile, parts of the Greater Accra Region experienced three consecutive earth tremors within the space of five hours in December last year.
