Robbers Ambush Legon Cities After Defeat To Samartex

Visiting Legon Cities had their wound rubbed with salt on Wednesday on their return home after losing all three points to their hosts, FC Samartex 1996

The team including players and officials were ambushed by armed robbers along the Bibiani – Kumasi highway at around 11 p.m.

In a press statement, the club confirmed, “On our way back to Accra after honouring the Ghana Premier League fixture against FC Samartex, our team was attacked by armed robbers at Toase.”

The team gave up belongings including phones, laptops and money, said the club which also noted that the team was back in Accra safely.

Meanwhile, they are yet to file an official complaint with the police.

Pictures from the scene showed a smashed driver’s side window while Osman Amadu was pictured in another picture with a bandaged hand.

This is not the first time the club has suffered a highway robbery. Before rebranding as Legon Cities, the then Wa All Stars suffered a similar fate while journeying for a clash against Hearts of Oak in 2008.

Other clubs including Asante Kotoko and AshantiGold have had their own history of the robbery.

In March 2022, the team bus of suspended Club Ashantigold was attacked while returning home after a match against Hearts of Oak while Asante Kotoko SC during their lodge at a hotel in Accra in 2015 ahead of a match against Hearts of Oak became victims.
