Parliament Forced to Adjourn Over Death of Akwatia MP

The Parliament of Ghana was forced on Monday, July 7, 2025, afternoon to suspend sittings following the news of the death of the Member of Parliament for Akwatia Constituency, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

A motion for the adjournment of the sitting was moved by the Minority leader in Parliament, Hon Alexander Afenyo-Markin which was seconded by the Majority leader, Mahama Ayariga.

“This is sudden, unexpected. He was not seen as somebody unwell and therefore you are in pain. I will say God knows best…His contribution was profound and known. He had all that anybody would want to have in a brother.”

“Today we programmed a couple of businesses. The majority leader informed us last week of the business of this week. It is the prayer of this side of the house… that today’s proceedings be terminated.”

He stated that the news was a sad one for the whole of Ghana.

For his part, Hon Ayariga said his death was a “terrible” blow to the House, adding that it was a loss to the entire Parliament.

“This is a young man full of promise with a score of knowledge, and intellect, full of promise for a score of energy that this house needs. He was in the prime of his life. It’s not only a loss to his family and Akwatia constituency but the whole of Ghana because we won’t know where he would have needed up in terms of the leadership of this country and we might never know what we have missed by losing him early in his political career.”

The solemn House before adjourning observed a minute of silence for the departed soul.

The deceased lawmaker was last seen in Parliament over the weekend.
