Prisons to Manufacture Sanitary Towels Under Free Sanitary Pad Policy

The government is considering outsourcing sanitary towel production to prisons under the Free Sanitary Pad Policy.

According to Felix Ofosu Kwakye, the Minister for Government Communication, the proposal is under review.

In the meantime, he said a directive had been issued for the sanitary towels to be procured locally for distribution.

“The President directs that ALL sanitary pads under the Free Sanitary Pad policy be procured locally. No import whatsoever allowed. Proposal under review to set up Sanitary Pad manufacturing firm in Prisons.”

President John Dramani Mahama launched the Free Sanitary Pad Distribution Programme in April in the spirit of gender equality and to improve school attendance among girls.

It is envisioned to ensure menstrual dignity and support the education of vulnerable girls.

Under the initiative, free sanitary pads will be given to girls from Primary 5 through senior high school nationwide.
