Police Secure Conviction of Driver Seen Driving Recklessly in Viral Video

The Ghana Police Service has secured the conviction of a driver who was captured in a widely circulated video driving dangerously along the Kumasi-Accra highway, endangering the lives of other road users.
The convict, identified as Agyarko Richard, was the driver of a Toyota Voxy vehicle with registration number EN 551-26. Following the viral spread of the video on social media, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) launched investigations leading to his arrest.
Richard was subsequently charged with Driving on the wrong side of the road, Causing road obstruction, Causing danger to other road users, and Careless and inconsiderate driving.
These charges contravene the Road Traffic Regulations.
On 8th May 2026, the accused was arraigned before the La Motor Court, presided over by Her Worship Adwoa Sakyi Asumadu and Agyarko Richard pleaded guilty to all charges.
The court convicted him on his own plea and imposed the following sentences:
· A fine of 260 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢3,120.00, or in default, 15 days’ imprisonment with hard labour.
· An additional sentence of two months’ imprisonment with hard labour.
Warning
In a statement following the conviction, the Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to enforcing road traffic laws. The Service warned motorists against reckless driving, which continues to pose a serious threat to public safety.
“Motorists are urged to drive responsibly and comply with all road traffic regulations to help protect lives and property,” the Police stated.
he case serves as a strong deterrent to drivers who engage in dangerous manoeuvres on public roads, especially in the era of social media where such violations are often recorded and shared.
