PL Bosses ‘Call For Radical Rule Change Over Sackings’

Leading managers are reportedly calling for new rules that mean they can only be sacked during transfer windows.

Players can only move between clubs during the summer and January windows and top-level bosses apparently believe a similar system should be in place for them.

The Sun reports that some experienced Premier League coaches are lobbying the League Managers Association for a change to the rules because sackings are too easy at the moment.

The newspaper quotes one anonymous manager as saying: ‘Players have contracts and rules that mean they are not moved outside of the windows. It should be the same for us.’

The 2022-23 season saw 12 sackings in the Premier League – including two by Chelsea and Leeds United – while two further bosses left posts by mutual consent.

The rate has slowed this season, with just three managers sacked, but that hasn’t stopped calls for change.

Bournemouth fired Gary O’Neil ahead of pre-season to bring in Andoni Iraola, while Sheffield United’s Paul Heckingbottom and Nottingham Forest’s Steve Cooper lost their jobs in December.

Julen Lopetegui left Wolves by mutual consent on the eve of the season, while Roy Hodgson stepped down at Crystal Palace last week following a health scare.
In addition, Jurgen Klopp has announced he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season.

But the churn of managers in the Championship has seen 12 sackings already this season, with Michael Beale at Sunderland and Joe Edwards at Millwall the latest victims.

There have been 10 sackings in League One and 13 in League Two this season, an indication of decreasing patience among owners if results begin to go badly.
