Early Primaries Give NPP Time for Introspection, Unity and Reforms — Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will have enough time to reflect on its challenges and rebuild following its recent presidential primaries, former Majority Leader Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has said.
Speaking in an interview conducted by Kofi Boakye on Nkwantannanso on Opemsuo Radio, the former Member of Parliament for Suame said the early conduct of the primaries creates an opportunity for the party to undertake serious introspection, strengthen unity, and implement internal reforms ahead of the next general election.
He described the primaries as generally successful but noted that important lessons had emerged from the process.
According to him, while internal contests are inevitable, the party must be careful in managing post-primary tensions to preserve unity.
“At the end of the day, it was an election and only one person could win. If care is not taken and the defined party path is not followed, unity becomes very difficult,” he said.
Hon. Kyei Mensah Bonsu explained that holding the primaries early gives the party sufficient time to assess what went wrong and reorganise.
“The good thing is that we have done our primaries early. This gives us about three years to seriously reflect on what went wrong and find ways to come together again,” he stated.
He stressed that party unity alone is not enough to win elections, emphasising the need to attract floating voters.
“The strength of the NPP is around 46 to 47 percent. Even when we are united, that is not enough. We need floating voters, and we must make the party attractive to them if we want to win elections,” he added.
The former MP also called for structural reforms within the party, particularly in leadership development and training.
He expressed concern about individuals rising rapidly through the party ranks without adequate preparation or understanding of the party’s history and values.
“Sometimes people come from nowhere and occupy key positions. We need to train our people and ensure that before someone gets to a certain position, they have served and can be judged by their track record,” he said.
Hon. Kyei Mensah Bonsu said strengthening internal processes and preserving party values would be critical as the NPP prepares for future elections.
