Otumfuo to Open 5-Month Exhibition of Looted Asante Gold Regalia in 2027

The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will in April 2027 launch an exhibition of Asante gold regalia looted by the British during the 1874 Anglo-Asante war, in partnership with the Wallace Collection.
The exhibition will feature 14 pieces of gold regalia taken during the third Anglo-Asante war.
It will open at the Housekeeper’s Room in Hertford House, London, on April 14, 2027, and run for five months, ending in November 2027.
A companion international conference with over 200 participants will be held alongside the exhibition.
According to the Director of the Manhyia Palace Museum, Ivor Agyeman-Duah, the exhibition marks the formal opening of the Asante Kingdom’s restitution engagement with stakeholders.
The announcement forms part of two major exhibitions of interest to both England and Asante.
The first will take place on May 29, 2026, with the opening of Winston Churchill: The Painter, an exhibition of works by the former British wartime leader. The 50-painting show has already been oversubscribed for its entire six-month run.
The announcement was made during the 2026 edition of the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Art Awards at the Manhyia Palace on May 13, 2026.
