Otumfuo Grants Free Lease Of Kumasi Central Mosque Valued At GHC 28M

The Kumasi Central Mosque Committee will no longer have to pay GHc 28 Million as lease to maintain the mosque.

This is because Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has granted a lease renewal pardon to the mosque.

The lease of the mosque situated at Akwatialine was due and had to be renewed at a cost of GHC 28 million, however, after the development got to the attention of the monarch, the fee has been axed and annuled.

This was disclosed by the King during the commissioning of the renovated mosque on Friday, March 3, 2023.

He said the lease expiration was brought to his attention by the Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun.

“The Ashanti Regional Chief Imam came to discuss the expiration of the mosques’ lease. He said he was being charged GHC28 million.”

He said he told the regional Imam the mosque was his and therefore there was no need to pay the lease fee.

The King recollected the outset of the mosque and affirmed that it was part of the kingdom.

“In 1954, the then King of the Asante Kingdom {Otumfuo Sir Agyeman Prempeh II} noticed with dismay, the fact that muslims who worshipped at a small mosque at Roman Hill laid their mats in the open air to pray. He invited the then Zongo chief and the Ashanti Regional Imam then and gave them a plot of land- a place which will soon be earmarked as a market by City Planners- so a new land, where the Kumasi Central Mosque sits today was given out.”

He said Otumfuo Sir Agyeman Prempeh II didn’t end there: he supervised the sod-cutting ceremony and all preparations toward the construction of the mosque.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was at the event to commission the reconstructed mosque which was funded by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

In attendance were Vice President and his wife, Samira Bawumia, the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, the Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun, some Members of Parliament from the Region as well as high-profile personalities.

The beautiful edifice now has 7,000 seating capacity.

Commending the veep, Otumfuo charged the custodians of the mosque to take care of it and maintain it.
