Obuasi West MP Justifies Rejection of Dep Finance Minister Position

The Member of Parliament for Obuasi West Constituency, Kwaku Kwarteng, has assigned two reasons for his decision to reject his reappointment as Deputy Minister for Finance in the latest reshuffle conducted by President Nana Ado Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

In a statement released on February 16, the lawmaker said he performs better at the legislative mandate than the executive, especially in the area of finance.

“The role of Parliament in the work of the Executive, especially in matters relating to finance and economy, is critical. It is my humble belief that I can better support the work of government from Parliament.”

Additionally, he said his intention of contributing to crafting of ruling party’s messages and governance strategies ahead of the 2024 general elections added on to the causes for the rejection.

“I also intend to play a dedicated role in the crafting of the NPP’s messages and governance strategies going forward and going into the 2024 general elections. I consider that I am better placed to do so as a non-ministerial Member of Parliament.”

That notwithstanding, Hon Kwarteng, expressed his appreciation to the President for finding him worthy of the position.

Hon Kwarteng was Deputy Finance Minister from 2017 to 2021.

President Akufo-Addo has reassigned Mohammed Amin Adam to the head the Finance Ministry, retaining all two deputies at the Ministry in his latest ministerial shake-up.
