New Manhyia Palace Museum Under Construction

A new state-of-the-art museum is being constructed by the Manhyia Palace.

The arts gallery will replace the current one which once was the residence of Occupants of the Golden Stool.

This was made known on May 2, 2025 by the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II during a courtesy visit by the leadership of AngloGold Ashanti.

The conversation that ensued between the Asantehene and AngloGold centered on Asante regalia looted by the British, some of which have over the years been acquired and displayed in the museum of the gold firm.

The Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer of AngloGold Ashanti, Stewart Bailey, informed His Majesty of plans to release a significant consignment of such artefacts, after 28 were returned to the Kingdom last year.

He said the paperwork for the release was being processed and requested to pay a visit to the new Museum to catch a glance at the artefacts when completed.

“They will be delivered once the necessary paperwork is done, to be displayed in that magnificent facility so that the people in Kumasi and Ashanti Region and Ghana and the entire continent can look at these amazing examples of craftsmanship and artisanship.”

The King expressed his appreciation to AngloGold for its support towards the construction of a new Museum.

His Majesty is confident that the completion of the Museum will be timely to meet the return of the incoming artefacts.

“Thank you also for the support for the Museum also. By the time we have these artefacts, we will make sure the Museum is also completed so we display the items together. One day when you return you will see the building you have helped to construct and the items being displayed.”

Opened in 1995, the existing Manhyia Palace Museum was originally built as a home for the Asantehene, Nana Agyeman Prempeh I. He lived there from 1925 to 1931 on his return from British exile in the Seychelles.

The Palace Museum has attracted tourists from across the globe.

The 2023 Tourism Report ranked the Manhyia Palace Museum 10th with a total of 57,319 visitors.
